A Time To Stitch What's Your Bag? Reveal hosted by: Therese Frank and Christine Altmiller

Hi Y'all,

Welcome to mine and Christine's eight addition to A Time To Stitch.  This go around we decided to do beaded bags.  It could be any kind of bag as long as it has beads on it in some sort of fashion.

I had big plans to make more than one bag, but as usual I only got one bag done, and I finished it just in time for the reveal.

I also have a guest on my blog today, my friend Cynthia Wilson.  She does not have a blog, but she wanted to participate in the challenge. So I will show you Cynthia's bag first, then mine.

Cynthia calls this Dragon Warrior against Cancer. Cynthia found the dragon at Hobby Lobby and knew that she had to do a bead embroidery piece with the dragon. The dragon is copper tone metal with purple crystals in the wings and eye. She scattered other crystals and purple glass pearls around and swirled purple seed beads all around. the border around the motif is done with super duos and size 15 seed beads. Cynthia whip stitched around the edges of the purse with purple iris size 11 seed beads, and along the bottom of the purse Cynthia did a lace trim with the size 11 seed beads. The strap is done with super duos.

Now my purse.

I had glued the Glen Green/Larsonite Jasper and Citrine  cabs to a piece of bead backing and was waiting and waiting for the cabochons to speak to me. Finally they began to speak to me and I am pleased with how it turned out. I went to Hancock Fabrics and was looking for some material to make a purse to put the bead embroidered piece onto. I found some ultra suede but it was to flimsy. I saw some satin that I liked but not stiff enough. then I saw some canvas and it was perfect.
I cut a strip of the canvas and a strip of some white broad cloth for the lining. There it sat up until Thursday when I sewed the bag together and glued the motif to the flap and when it was dry I sewed it down as well.  I decided to do a diagonal design and put a glass pearl at the intersections. I had to open back up one side so I could get my needle and thread inside of the bag. As I was stitching the design on the bag I was thinking about what I was going to use for the strap. I knew I did not have time to bead one.  I remembered I had this rolo chain and it was long enough to make an across the body strap.

This bag is going to be my nieces Christmas present. She is in college and it is the perfect size to carry her cell phone, driver license, student ID and some money. (The citrine looks like it is fractured, well it is, but on the inside the outside of the cab is very smooth and not fractured, some people call the fractures on the inside of a transparent stone angel lights.)

Thank you for stopping by and visiting my blog. Please leave a comment I love hearing from you.
Thank you Christine for being my partner in the on going A Time To Stitch challenges, you are the best.

Now please go by and visit the other participants in this challenge.

Happy beading Y'all

  1. I very impressed by both bags and a bit jealous too. Cynthia's bag is so exquisite and sophisticated, I don't think I could ever make something like that by myself. Yours is a practical bag yet and beautiful. The cabs and the seed beads were perfectly chosen for the canvas. I love it too. Thank you so much Therese for organising this blog hop.

  2. Loved both the bags Therese . Cynthia`s bag looks lovely with that dragon really catching the eye among all that beautiful embroidery. And your purse is fabulous too . The restrained palette is so calming, and I am drawn to the straight-lined designs . Loved your idea of combining netting to make the purse !!

  3. Beautiful and so very different! Cynthia's clutch is for a night out or a Christmas party. Yours remind me of the lovely bags my mom used to make me - to carry around small items. Love the cabs and the diamond pattern on the body, perfectly matched. Thank you for hosting this challenge, albeit I rushed to make the deadline, I had fun and I loved every moment of it (the result too :) ).

  6. Your niece is going to be beyond thrilled to find your gift under her tree, Therese. And to think you even stitched up the purse itself! Would love to see that citrine in person. Thanks, as always, for challenging all of us and hosting this hop. And for showing us Cynthia's challenge piece. The colors and stitches she chose in her design are so elegant with her dragon.

Cynthia your bag is stunning. The beautiful whimsy of the bead pattern, yet anchored with the strength of the dragon does capture a woman indeed. That is a 'don't mess with me' bag! It is really a beauty

Therese thank you for hosting this hop with Christine. I always look forward to this hop and seeing what everyone has made. And you guys just keep coming up with new ways to challenge us all with bead weaving. This one was a fun one! I've been wanting to do a beaded bag for years!

  13. Both bags are truly works of art. The dragon and the satin go so well together, just takes it over the edge. I am sure your friend will want to create her own blog now that she has experienced the fun. Your niece will be so happy and what an awesome present, full of love. I love citrine's and the more shattered the better. I love the detail you put into this bag and the chain strap is a perfect compliment. Thank you again for hosting these hops, if I don't sign up for anything else I can't miss this.

  15. Therese, this is a great little bag! The cabs are beautiful together - as always, you have a great eye for combining colors. And the treatment on the lower part of the bag looks like you quilted it, which is a really nice touch. I'm so impressed that you actually constructed the bag from scratch. The chain as the strap is just the right touch for the canvas. Your niece will love it!

  19. What a lovely gift, I am sure your niece will love it and make good use of it. There is nothing quite like a small bag when you do not want to be bothered to carry a purse yet still need to tote along a few things.

  20. Cynthia's bag is just gorgeous! Your bag, to be gifted, is PERFECT for a cell phone! I especially like the cross-beading design on the fabric - it actually brings the eye to the center of your fabulous design! Just beautiful (as always!)

  21. Cynthia's bag is great. I love the dragon and the theme of it!

As for yours. . .so, so great! But I wouldn't have expected anything less from you. I think the canvas was a great choice with those stones and helps keep it somewhat casual for your niece too. Your beadwork and stonework really amaze me. You are an artist to be admired. . .and I do admire you! I hope you are well.

  22. Hello Therese :-) Better late than never.

Cynthia's bag is wonderful. The dragon is perfect I think I'd feel a little intimidated with such a beautiful beast, but she knew exactly what to do. I love the colors and organic shape of the beaded flap. It's almost like a wing ready to soar. She brought is all together with the beaded edging too. What a beauty. She really did a really great job!!!

Your bag is extremely lovely. Of course the cabs are wonderful, you are a master cab bezzler, after all. What really brings the bag together for me is the diagonal beading with pearls at the intersections. That was a touch of brilliance. Your niece is going to be so happy with this bag, I bet it will hardly ever leave her side!!!
